The Strand Lido and Leisure Park paddling pool in Gillingham to be transformed into children’s splash pad area in time for summer
Work is under way to renovate a popular paddling pool just in time for the summer.
A new splash pad, designed for children aged between three and 11, will open on May 24 at the start of the season at The Strand Lido in Gillingham, replacing the existing paddling pool.
The new beach-themed flat play area will feature 30 ground-level sensor-activated water jets for children to splash, play and soak in the fun.
The new attraction will initially open on weekends only from 11am to 5pm, before opening every day throughout the summer school holidays from 11am to 5pm, and will be completely free.
As part of the work, the surrounding area is being refreshed, with a relaxed seating spot, new bins and railings.
Work is already under way at the site for the May 24 opening.
Medway Council is refurbishing the area using £248,283 of section 106 money, which is made up of contributions from housing developers.
The splash pads will be a non-supervised area, which means children will need to be accompanied by a responsible adult.
The Strand opened in 1896 and is the only remaining riverside tidal saltwater pool in the country.
The leisure complex includes an outdoor leisure pool, six 25m lanes for swimming, a 300m lazy river, a cafe and play areas.
For the pools, sessions should be booked online beforehand. They cost £7.20 for adults, £4.75 for juniors, and £4.75 for seniors.
Cllr Nina Gurung, Medway Council’s portfolio holder for heritage, culture and leisure said: “The Strand, which is almost 130 years old, is a proud and iconic piece of Medway’s history and the only remaining riverside tidal saltwater pool in the country.
“We are proud to have invested in this exciting project to improve the already great offering and add a brand-new fun feature for our children and families to enjoy both this summer and for years to come.
“I look forward to seeing it take shape over the coming months, and hope as many of you as possible are able to splash, play and soak in the fun at The Strand this summer.”
