Review: Legoland Windsor Resort perfect for young Kent families

We own a lot of duplo.

duplo trains, duplo animals, duplo construction sites and the piece de resistance as far as my toddler is concerned - duplo Disney Princess Castles – begged and pleaded for in Disneyland Paris 18 months ago.

And while our son, four, is taking tentative brick building steps with Lego Junior and Lego City, I fear their love of the coloured brick is yet to peak and so we embarked on a day trip to Legoland Resort Windsor.

The first thing you notice about the park is just how vast it is.

There are water rides, under the sea rides, train rides, and driving schools. Not to mention live shows, building workshops, all the model cities and display to take in and the water park at Duplo Valley.

We visited on a weekday during term time. The queues were manageable and no small person waited beyond their patience levels to hop on a ride.

Feedback however from people we chatted to in the queues suggested that school holidays and weekends, particularly in the height of summer, may be a slightly different matter if you have babies or very young children in tow.

And Legoland’s Q-Bot ride reservation service, not to mention some very tempting overnight stay deals in its hotel which come with the added bonus of being able to enter the park before anyone else, perhaps suggest that waiting times could be arduous in busy periods making it difficult to get round everything the park has to offer – including an incredible 55 interactive rides – in one day.

But at just two and four our children are at the early end of the park’s target audience of two to 12, which consequently ruled them out of getting on every ride, much to my son’s disappointment, who is not adverse to eyeing up a roller coaster far larger than his young years.

By the end of the day we had ridden almost everything on our wish list, found time for two shows (one while we ate) and a bit of a splash in Duplo Valley, which was a big hit among the little people.

We didn’t make it as far as Land of the Vikings, but with only one suitable ride outlined thanks to a handy key on our free map which identified attractions suitable for young riders, it wasn’t something any of us would lose much sleep over.

On reflection we perhaps didn’t leave enough time to adequately explore the wonderful models and city scenes, rushing the children through the last few but it is something we will know for next time should we return.

Legoland was a big hit with our budding brick builders but a full day is definitely required at the very least.

Ensure you arrive as the gates open and prepare to stay until closing, even if this coincides with the M25 rush hour, in order to get the most from your day and value for money from your tickets.
