Bluewater's Nature Trail welcomes The Very Hungry Caterpillar

A very hungry caterpillar has wriggled into a popular north Kent nature trail.

Bluewater shopping centre has relaunched its outdoor attraction, which is now in partnership with the classic children's book The Very Hungry Caterpillar. It is the second nature trail in Kent this summer to make some new additions after Walmer Castle introduced a new trail and outdoor play area.

The picture book, written and illustrated by Eric Carle, tells the story of a caterpillar who eats everything in sight before turning into a beautiful butterfly.

And now the tale, which is celebrating its 50th birthday since first being published, is set to be devoured by visitors to the centre's nature areas which include walking routes, lakes and play areas.

To enjoy the Nature Trail families can collect a free trail map from inside the mall before following The Very Hungry Caterpillar-themed signs to explore the outside spaces which also has stepping logs, water fountains and hopscotch among attractions.

Amidst their adventures, children will also be able to track down a giant wooden sculpture of The Very Hungry Caterpillar crafted by local sculptor Steven Porchmouth.

There’s also a new spider climbing frame in the heart of the Nature Trail, adding to the host of fun outdoor activities on offer.

The arrival of The Very Hungry Caterpillar comes as Bluewater is given a Green Flag award for the fourth consecutive year, which identify and reward the UK’s leading parks and green spaces.

Robert Goodman, Bluewater’s general manager, said: “We’re delighted to celebrate this new chapter of our popular Nature Trail through a partnership with The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which has entertained children for the past 50 years. I am sure the new sculpture will quickly become a favourite with kids and adults alike.”
