A Christmas lights trail is coming to the grounds of a Kent castle for the first time.

Walmer Castle and Gardens has been chosen as the venue for one of English Heritage's popular glittering enchanted evening attractions which will open in the run up to Christmas.

Walmer Castle and Gardens has announced plans for an after-dark experience

An 'unforgettable experience' of light, colour and sound is being promised at the castle in Kingsdown Road, Deal.

Walmer Castle's stunning grounds will be transformed into an illuminated world which will take families on an after-dark adventure through tunnels and pathways of twinkling lights.

Tickets are now on sale for the new event with families able to choose a time slot on Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday evenings between December 5 and December 22.

The trail will lead visitors through the Queen Mother’s Garden, where coloured fountains in the pond will rise and fall, to the Woodland Walk and onward toward the new historic Glen.

Along the way visitors will be able to spot dancing fairies flitting among the leaves, encounter trolls in their den and meet wise old talking trees - they can also change the way the lighting dramatically illuminates the trees says organisers.

After enjoying the trail, there will be fairground rides and games to try and family pictures to pose for in front of the strikingly lit Broadwalk, for a small extra charge. There will also be refreshments in the form of mince pies, mulled wine and marshmallows to toast together with the opportunity to do some Christmas gift-buying in the Castle's shop.

Prices range from £14 for adults and £9.50 for children on Saturdays and Sundays with a family ticket priced at £37.50. Thursday and Friday evenings are £2 cheaper and there are also discounts for English Heritage members.
