Chimera indoor climbing and bouldering centre opens in Canterbury

Kent's newest indoor climbing centre has officially opened its doors for the first time.

Located in Canterbury on the Wincheap Industrial Estate, the new attraction offers climbers of all abilities the chance to try their hand at bouldering.

Rather than ropes and harnesses, the indoor centre - run by Chimera - features crash pads and lower walls.

Following the opening of the Canterbury attraction, a company spokesman said: "From hanging upside down, to extreme tests of balance, bouldering seems to work all sorts of skills and everyone certainly walks away with a smile on their faces.

"Bouldering will be in the Olympics next year, and it is easy to see why this sport has become so popular.

"The best climbers seem to defy gravity in a mixture of gymnastics and acri-yoga moves, but there really is something for everyone with easily differentiated colour-coded routes for all abilities from beginner to advanced."

Having looked at a host of other potential sites across the district, the team at Chimera - fronted by managing director Chris Searle - favoured Wincheap due to its close proximity to the city and public transport links.

Chimera was kickstarted in 2013, with the original Kent climbing centre opening in Tunbridge Wells.

A general admission day ticket for adults costs £12, and £9 for under 16s.
