Billy Joel's Uptown Girl is ringing out as Trish McEvoy takes to the stage on the fifth floor of Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge, while an audience of around 40 women, seated at tables - each with their own illuminated make-up mirror - claps along.

It's an apt song choice, because the make-up legend - that's no exaggeration, she's been in the business for more than 40 years - is here for a special masterclass event, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of her eponymous brand and demonstrate what she calls the 'uptown-girl look'.

"This seven-step routine will change your life," Trish tells the crowd, as she wanders around the room, microphone in hand. But it won't necessarily help you bag an uptown boy.

Trish founded her company in the mid-1970s when the only readily available makeup tools were the sponge applicators that came free with compacts.

"I'm not a dating service," she laughs. "I'm a make-up artist. My job is for you to fall in love with how you do your make-up."

Created with the Power Of Makeup Confident Collection, a limited-edition set for the festive season, the routine is intended to help you "put your best face forward without a lot of complication".

And whether you're using Trish's collection or want some direction on how to improve your own make-up skills, the glam look is ideal for party season.

Here's the seven-step guide to uptown-girl glamour...

1. Brighten the upper eyelid

Start by by applying a thin layer of concealer on your eyelids to cover any veins and redness, and act as a base for eyeshadow and liner.

2. Eyeliner and colour

This isn't about a precise line. The 24 Hour Eyeshadow & Liner in Smokey Quartz is roughly pencilled onto the top lash line then blended out. Use your ring finger because it's the lightest touch, Trish recommends.

3. Lash enhancement

Trish is a big fan of eyelash curlers, so once you've curled your lashes (by clamping the curlers at the root, then mid way, then at the tip), apply a few coats of Lash Curling Mascara to seal the deal.

4. Triangle of Light

Using Instant Eye Lift, draw an upside down triangle beneath each eye to create 'an illusion of light' and banish dark circles. Blend by gently pressing it in, so you don't wipe away the product.

5. Even skin

BB cream is better than foundation, Trish believes, because you get a beautiful even finish, plus that all-important sunscreen. Start on the cheeks and work down from the triangle of light, stippling with a brush all over your face, then set with a light sweep of powder.

6. Face colour

For a dewy, rosy-cheeked look, dab Liquid Face Colour on the back of your hand then press it in onto your cheeks with your ring finger. Smile, start on the apple of the cheek and blend outwards. Start with a little then build up to the desired intensity.

7. Lip enhancement

Taking a creamy red lipstick, use the tip as a liner, then fill in the rest of your pout with the flat side. And that's it - your uptown makeover is complete.
