Fireman Sam leads Child Accident Prevention Trust's summer campaign

by Lauren Abbott

The nation's favourite fireman is leading a campaign to keep kids safe this summer.

Fireman Sam, the ultimate hero next door, is fronting an annual initiative by the Child Accident Prevention Trust to raise awareness of child-related accidents and how they can be prevented.

The campaign is aimed at teaching children about summer safety including how to be sensible around water while swimming and when playing near barbecues.

Fireman Sam’s Top Ten Summer Safety Tips

1 Always walk when you are near a swimming pool, never run.

2 Never push anyone into a swimming pool.

3 If you are swimming in the sea, never turn your back to the sea, this will prevent you from seeing big waves coming towards you.

4 Take care when paddling and swimming in the sea as the water can get deep very quickly.

5 Always ensure you have a responsible adult with you when paddling and swimming in the sea.

6 Always leave lighting a barbeque to a responsible adult.

7 Ensure you keep your barbeque a safe distance from trees, bushes and anything else that may catch fire before lighting it.

8 Make sure that your barbeque is placed on a flat surface so it stays in place once it’s lit.

9 Always stand back from a barbeque and keep a safe distance whilst it is in use.

10 Stand back from the edge of the platform at the railway station and never push anyone whilst on the platform.

Katrina Phillips, chief executive of the Child Accident Prevention Trust, said: “The Fireman Sam Summer Safety videos are a fantastic way to help families learn about safety while having fun.

"Young children can learn key safety rules while parents are reminded just how quickly children can forget these rules when excited."
